Chapter 19

Did Bromide interfere with the ritual?

As Reva doused her face with cold water, she tried not to think of that possibility. However, the notion lingered. Even as she tried to preoccupy herself with the thought of finding Donna’s killer by speaking with Natty, she simply couldn’t shake the feeling.

Yet, some doubt lingered. She knew what Bromide’s energy felt like, but she didn’t feel anything similar while Aunt Alva performed the ritual.

She splashed more water on her face until the cold started hurting her skin. Reaching for a towel, she figured that she was just imagining things. It was quite possible that Bromide had nothing to do with the situation, which was what Reva desperately hoped.

They didn’t need Bromide turning rogue on them during a time like this.

Shifting her focus, she stared down at her skin and tried to imagine the blue hue that glowed off of her while she used magic. What did it mean? She never experienced something like that before, but Auntie appeared petrified.

“This case is going to be the death of me,” she mumbled bitterly. “Or Pistol. Either one.”

Just as she finished washing her face, she heard a pitiful noise coming from outside the bathroom window. Reva frowned, unsure of what to make of it.

A person sobbed outside her window. A woman.

The window was perched too high above the sink for Reva to peek her head out and see the person outside, but she heard it clearly. The window also faced The Yews, so she didn’t know whether the person crying their heart out was a ghost or a human.

“I-I don’t want to do this anymore!”

“Please, let’s talk about this somewhere else.”

Reva’s eyes widened. Another person?

She desperately wanted to leap onto the bathroom sink and stick her head out of the window to see what was happening outside. After contemplating the thought, she decided that it was worth a try. Grimacing as she dirtied the counter with her shoes, she carefully opened the window and gazed down.

To her surprise, she saw no one. The people talking were long gone, so it seemed.

“What’s going on at my hotel?” Reva asked herself, running a hand along her face. “This whole thing is driving me nuts.”

Did she recognize those voices? She wasn’t sure, unable to recall anyone who spoke with the cadences she just heard. Reva scrubbed down the counter and brushed her hands along her clothes, smoothing out the wrinkles. She wanted to leave with Matt.

As she exited the bathroom and made her way back to the lobby, she kept wondering about the two people outside the window. A quintessential example of unrequited love? She wasn’t sure, but the male counterpart to the female sounded more reassured and indifferent overall.

“Are you feeling better, Reva?”

“Worlds better,” she replied, smiling at Matt. “Sorry that I took too long.”

“What did you have for dinner? Burritos?” Pistol asked, perched on Aunt Alva’s shoulder. “If so, then I don’t blame you.”

“Nothing happened in there, right? Did you feel disoriented or weak? As if you were about to faint?” Matt pressed, eyes scanning her body.
